One of the key takeaways from GE2020 has been the need for more diversity – in representation, in opinions, in solutions. It is clear that Singaporeans are becoming more confident about their identities and their right to be heard and considered.
Unlike in the past, they are also not afraid to speak up against the status quo.
This need echoes what is happening around the world. More diverse voices are fighting to be heard, fueled – and often times, distorted – by social media.
While the principal drive to embrace diversity is a noble one, it has also resulted in deep divides as identity politics and culture wars make civil debate impossible.
Thankfully, Singapore has not reached that stage yet.
However, it is clear that something needs to be done to enable authentic and impartial conversations to take place.
This is where On Diversity, IPS’ first podcast series, comes in.
In each episode, Ong Soh Chin, the institute’s Deputy Director (Strategic Planning and External Relations) will speak to two guests to explore what diversity means to them, the changes they are making and the changes they hope to see in an increasingly fragmented society.
